Enhancing Online Course Design: Applying E-learning in Digital Teaching Material Development

Time: 8:00 AM – 11:52 AM, April 2, 2025
Venue: Room A101
Presenter: Dr. Phạm Đức Toàn

With the goal of promoting digital transformation in teaching and learning, on April 2, 2025, the Faculty of Pharmacy – Ton Duc Thang University organized its monthly academic seminar with the theme: "Application of E-learning in Lesson Design Towards Implementing Online Courses." The session was delivered by Dr. Phạm Đức Toàn and attended by various faculty members.

In his presentation, Dr. Toàn provided a systematic overview of key concepts and regulations related to digital learning resources, including the processes for evaluating and categorizing such materials. He clarified the standards for asynchronous online education at levels 1, 2, and 3, as defined by the university, and discussed the specific requirements for slide design, video lectures, and interactive learning resources at each level.

A highlight of the session was the hands-on demonstration, which included:

  • Creating lecture slides for level 2 and 3 asynchronous courses, emphasizing conciseness and interactivity.

  • Designing assignments and assessments on the E-learning system, including multiple-choice questions, discussion prompts in forums, short essays, and true/false items.

  • Utilizing tools such as Gradebook, and exporting data for evaluation and content validation purposes.

The discussion segment was dynamic, with several practical questions raised:

  • Ms. Đặng Thị Thùy Ngân asked about how to effectively utilize reference course shells. Dr. Toàn explained that instructors, including guest lecturers, may import reference courses into specific course shells and supplement them with additional content, for which they bear full responsibility.

  • Dr. Trần Gia Bửu inquired about how to ensure that newly created exercises do not duplicate exam questions. Dr. Toàn recommended using alternative question types not included in midterm or final assessments.

  • Ms. Trần Mộng Kha expressed concern about covering all necessary content within the 20-minute video limit. The suggestion was to divide lectures into multiple concise videos, each under 20 minutes, to maintain learner engagement while ensuring adequate content delivery.

The session was highly practical, equipping faculty members with essential knowledge and skills for building effective online courses—contributing to the university’s digital transformation in education.
